All United Methodist Churches in Washington State and the panhandle of Idaho are part of the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference (PNWAC), a connectional body including 267 churches (more on this later). We also have a church in Canada, amazing!

Our Conference (or the Office of Connectional Ministries) has an Associate Director of Connectional Ministries with Youth and Young Adults. This person works to provide for the needs of youth and young adults, and those that work with them (you) in our Annual Conference by: Working with the Conference Councils on Youth & Young Adult Ministries to provide opportunities for young people from our local churches to come together in Christian fellowship, spiritual growth, leadership development and service (more about CCOYM & CCOYAM later). Advocating for the concerns of Youth & Young Adults in our Annual Conference. Promoting connectional opportunities for young people. Providing training and support for Adult Workers with Youth & Young Adults. Consulting with churches as they revision, develop and hire for youth ministry programs.

Another important person to know is the Assistant for Youth and Young Adult Ministries. She will help you (and your group) to register for a variety of activities for young people including Camping, CONVO, Jr. High/Middle School Retreats, Young Adult Retreat, etc.

District Offices

Our Annual Conference is broken down into six regional areas called Districts. The Six Districts in the PNWAC are Inland, Puget Sound, Seattle, Seven Rivers, Tacoma and Vancouver.

Within each District there may be several ad hoc groups called clusters, sub-districts, etc. Each District is served by a District Superintendent who works out of a District Office with a secretary. The District Superintendent (or DS) is an ordained Elder (pastor) in the church appointed to the position. Their primary task is to supervise and resource the pastors and churches in their district.

Districts can have their own District Youth Teams that plan and host events for the youth in the District (and beyond). For example, Seattle District hosts the SUMYT Retreat at Camp Indianola in the Spring (which is open to youth from across the Conference). The scope and attention given to youth ministry in each District varies.
